Old Le Mans and the Plantagenet City: A Journey Through Time

The Plantagenet City, the historic heart of Le Mans, is an architectural gem that transports you back to the Middle Ages. With its half-timbered houses, cobbled streets and majestic cathedral, it is one of the most remarkable medieval ensembles in France.
What to see?
Saint-Julien Cathedral
A masterpiece blending Romanesque and Gothic art. Don't miss the 12th-century stained glass windows and the double transept, unique in France.
Half-timbered houses
The city has more than 60 half-timbered houses, some dating from the 14th century. The Maison du Pilier Rouge and the Maison d'Adam et Ève are the most famous.
The Gallo-Roman walls
The 3rd-century walls are among the best preserved in Europe. A walk along the ramparts offers a stunning view of the Sarthe river.
When to visit?
- In summer: the Nuit des Chimères projects luminous artworks onto the facades (free, from July to September).
- In December: the Christmas market transforms the city into a fairytale village.
