Le Mans Rillettes: A Gastronomic Treasure of the Sarthe
January 10, 20254 min read

Le Mans rillettes are much more than just a local product: they are part of the very identity of the Sarthe. This preparation of pork meat, slowly cooked in its own fat, is a must-try of local gastronomy.
A bit of history
Le Mans rillettes have held a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) since 2013. The tradition dates back to the Middle Ages, and the recipe has barely changed since.
Where to taste them?
- Marché des Jacobins: every Wednesday and Saturday, local producers offer their artisanal rillettes.
- La Maison des Rillettes: a shop-museum dedicated to this iconic product.
- Old Le Mans restaurants: several restaurants offer tasting boards.
Our recommendation
From our house, the Marché des Jacobins is a 15-minute drive. Take the opportunity to also discover other Sarthe specialities: Loué free-range chicken, Maine apples, and Jasnières wine.
